New elephant exhibit now open at SD zoo

My colleague Pat Brennan got the scoop on the latest exhibit to open down at the San Diego Zoo:

The woolly mammoths that once stomped their way through Southern California have not been brought back to life. But the San Diego Zoo’s new “Elephant Odyssey” does the next best thing: near relatives of a variety of extinct species roam a 7-acre exhibit designed to transport visitors back some 12,000 years.

The exhibit, which opened to the public on Saturday, also features jaguars, filling the paw prints of long-extinct saber-toothed cats, and tree sloths for the bear-sized ground sloths that are also extinct.

You can read more about the new enclosure here.
