After seeing a TV news report on the noxious Corpse Flower up at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, I wondered if our own stinky flower in Fullerton was a’ blooming. And guess what?
It died!
A staff member at the arboretum said the flower “was killed with kindness.” Somebody apparently over-watered the beast.
The stinky but fascinating Titan Arum, or “Corpse Flower,” had good run at the arboretum, repelling thousands of visitors with its foul odor of death. The flower typically bloomed every three years, but alas, it will bloom no more.
No word on whether the arboretum will get another Corpse Flower, but for the sake of amusement, we say yes, please do!
From a previous post by my peer, Science Dude:
“The Corpse Flower … is native to the rain forests of central Sumatra in Indonesia,” says Paula Selleck, a campus spokeswoman. “When the plant flowers, it produces a stench, presumably to attract insects that normally feed on dead animals, such as flies and carrion beetles. The insects then carry pollen from one plant to another, pollinating the plant’s flowers.”

Word from the botanical gardens: the flower’s power is fading, but if you want to make the drive north:

Recent animal news:
prolly some janitor lady cuz @ my work the janitor lady always used to over water all of our plants too…
Yeah, here too.
Based on your Engrish ocgurl, it appears you’re qualified to do little more than janitor lady.
Based on your outrage over grammar, it appears that you’re about 600 years old.
Based on your ridiculous comment about someone’s age who dislikes bad grammar, my guess is you flunked high-school English.
It pains me to approve comments like these, at all. But since they’re honest, albeit mean, I’ll let it go, for now.
I’d say she probably IS the janitor lady.
Poor flower. I hope they get a new one. It’s fun to see!
I agree!!
Their parasitic so their easy to find on a Cissis vine in S.E. Asia.
Speaking of parasitic, I wonder if they broke the law importing the plant.
Let’s all insult each other under the article about the dead plant! Yay!
Jason, you make a good point. Can we avoid the personal attacks so I don’t have to start deleting them? Hey, it’s almost Friday, be happy, commenters!
way to go glenn gulia.lets pick on girls! Unsatified loser
Poor flower..R.I.P
I have bad news for everyone. The Titan Arum did not die of kindness. Sorry… no such thing. More likely it died of human error. Or more bluntly - stupidity.
That really stinks.
Ha! You said it, DeeDee
LOL
I’m surprised there isn’t a back-up plant at a place like this; a source of a replacement in the event something like this happens.
I’m happy someone is concerned with grammar and the proper use of the English language. Failure to maintain proper standards means wd hv 2 pt up wth jnk lk ths nd uthr crp tht u cnt rd. OMG.
Loved this. And the headline made me laugh! (Yes — some of us — even old copyeditors etc — do have a sense of humor!!!) I have never caught a whiff of this lovely plant but over-watering it — that’s something I routinely do with my plants. Too bad you can’t do “smell-o-blog.” Well — that’s probably overdoing it.
Let’s hope the arboretum gets a new corpse flower … can’t believe I missed catching a whiff!!
