OK, it’s not an animal but it sure stunk like a dead one

stink.p062601.bbc.3.jpgAfter seeing a TV news report on the noxious Corpse Flower up at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, I wondered if our own stinky flower in Fullerton was a’ blooming. And guess what?

It died!

A staff member at the arboretum said the flower “was killed with kindness.” Somebody apparently over-watered the beast.

stinky.p052403.bbc.1.jpgThe stinky but fascinating Titan Arum, or “Corpse Flower,” had good run at the arboretum, repelling thousands of visitors with its foul odor of death. The flower typically bloomed every three years, but alas, it will bloom no more.

No word on whether the arboretum will get another Corpse Flower, but for the sake of amusement, we say yes, please do!

From a previous post by my peer, Science Dude:

“The Corpse Flower … is native to the rain forests of central Sumatra in Indonesia,” says Paula Selleck, a campus spokeswoman. “When the plant flowers, it produces a stench, presumably to attract insects that normally feed on dead animals, such as flies and carrion beetles. The insects then carry pollen from one plant to another, pollinating the plant’s flowers.”

Word from the botanical gardens: the flower’s power is fading, but if you want to make the drive north:
