*This post was updated after the eagle eye of one reader noted we had another Champ mistakenly indicated as a finalist. Our apologies to all parties involved. Champ, owned by Rick Rickafrente, also of Irvine, is a fabulous pooch, too.
Cesar Millan stole their thunder, we’re sure of it.
So, to make up for all the hoopla surrounding the famous dog trainer’s visit to Irvine on Monday, this post is for the top dogs of the Passionate Pet Halloween Costume Contest.
(The monkey reference in the headline is for Kitty, a finalist.)

Cheerleader Chloe, held by her owner Lauri Julian of Laguna Beach, was the grand prize winner.
There were 13 finalists in all. Six were top vote-getters in the online photo competition. The other seven were chosen by employees of Passionate Pet, a new retail complex that offers products and services for animal lovers.
We here at Pet Tales had a great time meeting many of you at the store’s grand opening. It was a lively bunch of spirited pet people — our kind of crowd.
Now at the end of two long months of voting for these costumed creatures and the portraits of My Dog’s Face, we can all give our click fingers a rest.
It’s time to pet the cat and walk the dog.
Turn the page to see all the faces and a list of finalists and their owners.
(Click on each photo to see the complete costume and pet!)

Recent animal news:
It would have been nice if SOMEONE had checked the photos before putting them on the site. You cut off ZuZu’s face.
Click on the photo, Linda, to see the complete frame. If we go just for the face, we miss the rest of the costume.
I agree because I thought Champ Young (i.e. Clown) was a finalist and an AKC Maltese ? ? ?
Nathan, thanks for noticing my mistake. We had several e-mails between The Register and Passionate Pet, and I got the two Champs crossed up! The post is updated and Champ’s photo added.
It looks like you fixed the problem with cutting off Zuzu’s face. Seriously though, someone should have thought that seeing a dog’s face is more important that seeing her tail…
That’s not the real CHAMP!!!!! Where did the Champ the pug go?!?!?!?!?!?!
I know all the pets are winners, but it’s unfortunate when you REMOVE a beloved pet from the Winners List after he’s been there ALL DAY! How does that happen anyway???? We LOVE YOU Champ Brady….
The wrong Champ was included in the finalists list, and that was my fault. I got an e-mail from the owner of another Champ, also from Irvine. So, the mistake was mine, and we still consider Champ the Pug a winner. We’re going to do our best to make it up to him and his owner!
The other Champ (football player) is a darling too. It just seems awfully cruel and disheartening to his supporters that after all our excitement and celebration, to be told that “ooops!”, ‘too bad for you but the editor got confused’.
Understood, Cathy, but unfortunately mistakes happen and there was no intention of cruelty on my behalf. I’m thrilled people care so much about their dogs, and that’s what matters most.
What a shame. Honest mistake but I can imagine both Champ owners were pretty upset.
Yes, Jude, they really were, which is a good reminder to me to always be thinking of the person on the other end of each story we post here. A lesson well learned, but it hurts to know I upset someone with an error.
