Are you terrified your teacup Chihuahua will get squished by an clumsy Great Dane at doggie daycare?
Theresa Vaughan had similar fears and realized she wasn’t happy sending her Westie to a boarding facility where large dogs ruled the roost.
“I think we small-pet owners worry that it just takes one crunch,” Vaughan said.
So, she started her own business: Little Doggie Diggs in Costa Mesa, which opened almost four months ago.
The facility offers a host of services for dogs 21 pounds and under:
K-9 kindergarten: The curriculum keeps small dog entertained and busy with puzzles, games, dance, stories and exercise.
Spa treatments: Basic grooming on up to mineral treatments, pawdicures, dematting and more.
Overnight accommodations: After a full day of play, overnight guests are treated to a G-rated movie and treats, and then a restful night in a canine condo. An overnight attendant ensures the pets are safe and content. Owners can retrieve their companions at any time, since someone is always on the premises.
“I know what it’s like to come home from vacation,” Vaughan said. “I want to get my dog!”
Dental care: Vaughan is a canine dental hygienist who specializes in a non-anesthesia alternative.
You can check service rates on the Little Doggie Diggs site.
For more information, call the Doggie Diggs at 949-515-0022 or send them an e-mail at: littledoggiediggs@att.net. They are located at 1606 Babcock Street, Costa Mesa, 92627. Click for the Google map. Normal business hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. but be sure to call ahead in the early hours.
And a special thank you goes to Janice Thomas, a client and pet owner who sent Pet Tales the tip about this new business!

Recent animal news:
I can’t thank you enough for this story. I have two mini dachshunds and I NEVER board them because the big dogs are too hard on my little girlie with the bad back and frankly my boy is afraid of big dogs and sometimes agressive with them out of fear. I will have to visit this business and see if they can meet my needs since I travel several times a year.
Keep us posted, Caveat. It sounds to me like Theresa is very vested in the wee pups. She understands their needs and spends a lot of time making sure they’re comfortable. And the fact that you’ll have someone on site when you travel, day and night, sounds appealing to me. AND the pickup being set at “anytime.” … Nice!
Our dog Buddy has been spending time at Little Doggie Diggs and he has been having a great time. Theresa is very good with the dogs left in her care. I never worry about Buddy. Since I work close by, I get to stop and see him at lunch, which is a bonus. Today he got groomed AT Little Doggie Diggs and he look terriffic. The setup she has got is wonderful. There are beds to lay on, toys to play with and of course lots of water bowls around. Theresa spends her time with the dogs, either keeping the watchful eye or playing with them herself! When we arrive in the morning, Buddy pulls me to the door, he so anxious to get in there.
I checked out a lot of doggie daycares and none of them compared at all to Little Doggie Diggs. Tinkerbell our 3.5 pound chihuahua needed a place to go and have fun but with dogs her own size and not to a place that said small dogs only to find out that what their view of a small dog was 40 pounds. Theresa is the best and Tinkerbell is our baby and i have not trusted her with anybody but Theresa who owns Little Doggie Diggs. All i can say is if you want to know your small dog is truly in great hands this is the perfect place. Please spread the word and this place is absolute heaven!
Thanks for sharing, Tammy!
