Exotic pet owners turn over animals on Amnesty Day

Miami Metrozoo accepted exotic pets from owners who could no longer care for them — no questions asked and no penalties assessed. Strange places: He with the most toys wins

February 9th, 2010, 2:00 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

vladimir-with-dolls

What goes well with a chilly, rainy day? How about a warm spot in the house … with toys nearby.

There is something special about pets and their toys. Some dogs will gut toys to remove those pesky squeakers. Others will bathe a “baby” and carry it from spot to spot. Cats often parade with their “kill” tucked between sharp teeth. Others love to play fetch.

Our Pets in Strange Places gallery celebrates these moments with some help from Vladimir (above) and Rusty. Here’s what their owners had to say:

Apparently our cat, Vladimir — a 2 year old Russian Blue — really loves the ladies. Last spring, he’d been home alone all afternoon and I found him in our daughter’s room just like this! It was a complete surprise! I always knew he was a CATSanova! — Lisa Padula

Rusty is a male, mixed-breed dog that my husband and I rescued from an animal shelter many years ago. Rusty adopted this stuffed Hippo and loves to sleep on top of it! — Bob and Betty Miner of Fountain Valley

Owy: Top 10 ailments for dogs and cats

February 9th, 2010, 11:52 am by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

If only our pets could talk.

Like us, they sometimes suffer from ailments that make life uncomfortable. It can take time for a pet owner to recognize a change in an otherwise healthy pet.

But suddenly Fido is rubbing his head a lot, or there’s a constant itch, or goop in his eye.

Off to the vet we go, like our own visits to the doctor’s office.

Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. of Brea collects more than a million claims annually for treatment of cats and dogs. Their data reveals that just like people, many dogs and cats receive treatment for non-emergency health care as well as ongoing disorders:

Top dog conditions Top cat conditions
1. Ear infection 1. Lower urinary tract disease
2. Skin allergy 2. Gastritis/vomiting
3. Skin infection/hot spots 3. Chronic renal failure
4. Gastritis/vomiting 4. Hyperthyroidism
5. Enteritis/diarrhea 5. Diabetes
6. Bladder infection 6. Enteritis/diarrhea
7. Arthritis 7. Skin allergy
8. Soft tissue trauma 8. Periodontitis/dental disease
9. Non-cancerous tumor 9. Ear infection
10. Eye infection 10. Eye infection

VPI received in 2009 nearly 68,000 canine claims for ear infections in 2009 – with an average claim fee of $100 per office visit.

For cats, VPI received 3,700 medical claims for lower urinary tract disease. Lower urinary tract disease cost cat owners an average of $260 per office visit.

The most expensive canine condition on the list (non-cancerous tumor) cost an average of $335 per visit, while, for cats, the most expensive condition (periodontitis/dental disease) cost an average of $360 per visit.

Tainted pet-food distributors sentenced

February 8th, 2010, 3:21 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

A federal judge has sentenced the owners of a Las Vegas-based ingredients broker to three years probation for distributing a tainted ingredient to pet food companies that led to the mass pet food recall in 2007.

Thousands of cats and dogs reportedly became sick or died after eating the tainted food. The case resulted in the recall of more than 150 brands of dog and cat food across the U.S.

U.S. Magistrate Judge John Maughmer ordered the probation for Stephen and Sally Miller, owners of ChemNutra Inc., on Feb. 5. In addition, the judge fined the Millers and ChemNutra a total of $35,000.

The court ruled that no further restitution would be imposed in light of a federal class action lawsuit in New Jersey that calls for a $24 million settlement.

ChemNutra and the Millers are alleged to have imported more than 800 metric tons of melamine-tainted wheat gluten from China between Nov. 6, 2006 and Feb. 21, 2007. The gluten was sold to various pet food manufacturers, according to an indictment filed in February 2008 in Missouri.

Self-cleaning oven fumes are deadly to birds

February 8th, 2010, 3:09 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

hulett-sigDear Marie, As a lot of people do, I started a project without reading the owner’s manual.  I started the self-cleaning action on my oven, opened the windows and the patio door, and told my husband I’d be back in a little while.

After running my chores, I went home and the oven was still going.  I thought it was only supposed to run for two hours, so I got the manual out.  On the first page of the cleaning instructions it stated that oven cleaning fumes could be fatal to birds and that all birds should be moved into the next room until it was finished.  I took off running for the kitchen, only to see my bird fall to the cage floor.  I grabbed her cage and ran outside.  I picked her up and she died in my hands.  It was horrible.

I know many people will say that they knew this about birds, but I did not.  But one thing I know now is that I will scour my user manuals in the future to see if anything I do will affect one of my pets, or a family member, and take action accordingly.  Please pass my message on, just in case it helps another bird owner. — Tracie, Yorba Linda

puppy-genius3Take it from someone who knows: Train your puppy young and everyone will be happier in the long run.

The first of six classes starts Feb. 13 and will be held at Founders Veterinary Clinic at 330 N. Brea Blvd. Each class will run from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.  and costs $95 for the six-week program.

Free treats from Lake Forest nonprofit

February 8th, 2010, 2:28 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

Friends of Lake Forest Animals (FOLFA) will hold a pet treat giveaway Saturday to show their thanks to residents who have supported the nonprofit organization.

This biscuit/treat giveaway will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 13 at Pet Country, located at 22485 El Toro Rd #A in Lake Forest. Each guest will receive a box of treats for their pet.

“We feel it’s important to show our thanks to the community,” said Heather Cereghino, the group’s director of public relations. “By having these treat giveaway events, it is a way for us to invite the community to come meet the board, get a treat for their pet and bring some foot traffic to our supporters business.”

Faux critters star in Super Bowl spots

Most of the creatures featured in the Super Bowl 44 commercials were computer generated — with the exception of Budweiser’s Clydesdale horses and that humongous bull … and the Labrador and a quest for Doritos.

So, here are three of our favorites. The fiddle-playing beaver of Monster.com and a Whale of a Tale for Bridgestone, and one very smart Lab.

My favorite Super Bowl commercial, however, stands: Cowboys herding cats

Strange places: Super Bowl hangovers

February 8th, 2010, 1:20 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

amore-in-sink

OK, who out there wanted to tack another day onto that spectacular (but short) weekend?

The rain left the plants shiny and drunk, and the wind blew away most of the clouds. Pets across Orange County got a warm day to romp outside, explore the grass, and turn their furry faces up to a bright sun.

bob-in-toilet

What’s left today is a collective of tired, satiated critters.

Pets in Strange Places today honors the Super Bowl hangover.

Amore (above), looks quite done in, slouched in his favorite bar sink. His owner, Nora Garibotti of Costa Mesa, writes:

I thought you might enjoy my cat, Amore, who is almost always in a strange place. Here, he decided to fall asleep in our bar sink. It appears as though he had too much to drink and conked out as a result. Near his head is a bottle of liquor, and a little silver cup that says, “A thimbleful.”

Amore is very loving and loves to sleep with me in bed on my chest, under the covers with the covers up to his neck, purring himself to sleep. He’s the best cat I ever had and more. He is a clown!

On the flip side is Bob, and while it might look like the poor guy had a rough day, he’s actually drinking from the toilet. His owner, Kathy McCrary, writes:

Bob, our Maine Coon cat, thinks he’s a dog.

Is Jesse James’ dog being held for ransom?

February 5th, 2010, 6:23 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

cb1It’s been 10 days since Jesse James’ pup Cinnabun slipped away from West Coast Choppers in Long Beach.

The Sunset Beach resident and husband of actress Sandra Bullock immediately began a full-scale Internet and media campaign to get the fawn pit bull back.

Tweets went singing across the land. A Facebook page was created. Leads were phoned in. Volunteers created fliers in English and Spanish and patrolled neighborhood streets.

The sightings came in fast and furiously: A man has her. She’s been seen at the Seal Beach Pier and Arbor Dog Park. She’s close …

Cinnabun’s Facebook fans were sharing tips and excited by every potential sighting. By Friday, they were nearly out of control with joy. The dog was almost home:

Everyone, I am so sorry, I got so excited earlier in the day, hearing of this discovery, we still cannot lose hope, I feel we are very close to finding her. Keep up the faith and prayers everyone.

The reward stands at a whopping $5,000, and yet, no Cinnabun.

Managers at WCC suspect the dog is being held by gangbangers in the neighborhood. Call it pride of ownership or a careful strategy to claim the reward, but neighbors have indicated someone not far from the shop has the dog.

So, the search continues, quietly.

WCC staff have asked fans to keep sightings and tips off Facebook and Twitter. It might help James and his team connect with whomever has the dog without spooking them.

Red Dodge, a manager of the shop’s magazine “Garage,” says Jesse is ready and willing to hand over the reward money.  “He just wants his dog back,” she said Friday.

If you have seen the Cinnabun, contact WCC through e-mail and by phone:

Man performs home surgery on his dog

February 5th, 2010, 5:20 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

illegal_dog_surgery_bx201File this one under “Don’t try this at home.”

Now, I’ll admit to a little DIY first aid on my pets — on minor injuries like small cuts or abrasions.

Why? Because pet health-care costs are creeping up, year after year, and sometimes this has people taking matters into their own hands.

That strategy, however, has gotten a Rhode Island man in trouble.

Alan MacQuattie — who says he couldn’t afford veterinary care for his dog — has been charged with illegally operating on the pet.

MacQuattie recently removed a cyst from the leg of his 14-year-old Labrador mix. The dog was operated on again by professionals to deal with an infection from the first surgery.

MacQuattie, 63, who says he is disabled and living on Social Security, said Friday he used local anesthetic to operate on the cyst and removed it on his own since he doesn’t have money for a veterinarian.

Video: Why I avoid toilet-cleaning chemicals

February 5th, 2010, 3:01 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

In my past life, I depended on eye-stinging products chock full of bleach to wipe out grime from the toilet — so I didn’t have to.

That all changed when I realized my young cats liked to stick their feet in the water. Instead, I endeavored to keep the lids down, always.

Today I was caught in a weak moment. Lid up, water swirling, Muppet made his move. He had both paws plunked in the bowl before I could holler, “Noooooo!”

No, I don’t recommend such playtime in the tidy bowl. But hey, he’s a curious cat!

Does your cat enjoy water? Let us know …

Missing a pet? Spread the word in Spanish

A group of volunteers in Long Beach and north Orange County continue their dogged pursuit of Cinnabun, the missing dog of Jesse James.

Come rain or shine, the fans of Cinnabun, James and his wife, actress Sandra Bullock, are out in force, distributing fliers and collecting leads from residents.

The dog went missing from James shop, West Coast Choppers, on Jan. 25. The fawn-colored pit bull is still a puppy at 9 months of age and likely wandered from the shop yard before anyone noticed.

Lupe Marquez-Bell, a volunteer with the find Cinnabun dog squad, sent me fliers today in both English and Spanish.

Lupe said there have been possible sightings at the Seal Beach Pier and near Magnolia Avenue near 11th Street in Long  Beach. James lives in Sunset Beach, an unincorporated area of Huntington Beach, just south of Seal Beach.

If you have seen the fawn-colored dog, contact James’ shop and associates through e-mail and by phone:

So, why dedicate so much space and time to one man’s dog? Pet owners can take a page from the “Find Cinnabun” effort and its wide-reaching tentacles. Today, pet owners can use a wide-range of networks to widen searches:cinnabun-flyer-020510
.

  • Contact local shelters and rescue groups and file a report.
  • Post a free “Lost” notice at Craigslist and at local newspapers.
  • Leave fliers with veterinarian clinics (bilingual, if possible)

Use social media:

Super pet tips for wet weekend of football

February 5th, 2010, 12:51 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

katy-snoozeNever mind that pesky football game come Sunday, what about your stir-crazy dog?

Our weekend forecast looks wet and gray. Expect to be stuck inside, prepping for The Big Game and avoiding tripping over your bored pet.

Pet Tales has some suggestions to keep your critters entertained and tired, so by 3 p.m. Sunday, you’ve got the couch to yourself (maybe). If you have bored kids, pair them up with the pets and you’ve got a winning combination.

Hide and seek: Dogs have great noses and they love treats. Put both to use by hiding treats around the house and encouraging your pup to “find.” I stick to the living room and typically hide broken pieces of dog biscuits in corners, under couch cushions, or behind the curtains. Katy has a blast sniffing her way around the space.

Brain exercises: Dog experts say training is a great form of mental exercise for dogs. Impromptu 20-minute sessions engage your pet’s mind and keep them focused. Work on “sit,” “stay,” or “place,” in the living room. Practice “heel” in the hallways. Reward liberally and then sit back enjoy two fine results: a trained and tired dog.

Get the mouse: For cats, employ simple toys like faux mice, fishing-pole-style lures or balled up pieces of paper to get them to run, leap and seek. I like to assemble ALL our cat toys (about a dozen or so) at one end of the living room. I toss them toward the cats who leap and snatch the toys from the air. Then we trade places and start over. (They haven’t mastered “fetch” yet.)

feb-pets-062Build a fort: Most cats like boxes or bags. To keep things safe, avoid the plastic bags, and instead find a box and create a play area. Cut holes — some small and for paws only — and an exit/entrance and then engage in a bit of cat and mouse. Soon enough, your furry feline will be zonked out in his new castle.

Go for a walk anyway: Don’t be afraid to get a little wet.

Food warning: It almost goes without saying, but avoid leaving Super Bowl snack food unattended and at head-level for pets (the coffee table). Nacho cheese, jalepeños and assorted other snack food (Ranch dip, chicken wings) are disasters waiting to happen in your pet’s stomach. Plus, you’d hate to make a beer run to the refrigerator only to return and find all your favorite foods missing!

The game between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts, by the way, will be on CBS. The Who will entertain fans at halftime. Check it out: For anyone who might be curious, Wikpedia has a list of all the halftime shows since the debut event in 1967.
