It ain’t over ’til the monkey sings: Contest finalists shine

October 27th, 2009, 6:13 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

*This post was updated after the eagle eye of one reader noted we had another Champ mistakenly indicated as a finalist. Our apologies to all parties involved.  Champ, owned by Rick Rickafrente, also of Irvine, is a fabulous pooch, too.

Cesar Millan stole their thunder, we’re sure of it.

So, to make up for all the hoopla surrounding the famous dog trainer’s visit to Irvine on Monday, this post is for the top dogs of the Passionate Pet Halloween Costume Contest.

(The monkey reference in the headline is for Kitty, a finalist.)

Cheerleader Chloe, held by her owner Lauri Julian of Laguna Beach, was the grand prize winner.

There were 13 finalists in all. Six were top vote-getters in the online photo competition. The other seven were chosen by employees of Passionate Pet, a new retail complex that offers products and services for animal lovers.

We here at Pet Tales had a great time meeting many of you at the store’s grand opening. It was a lively bunch of spirited pet people — our kind of crowd.

Now at the end of two long months of voting for these costumed creatures and the portraits of My Dog’s Face, we can all give our click fingers a rest.

It’s time to pet the cat and walk the dog.

Turn the page to see all the faces and a list of finalists and their owners.

The crowd at Passionate Pet in Irvine on Monday was dense and intense. Dozens of dogs, their owners, and employees waited for the star attraction, Cesar Millan.

cesar-passionateA line had formed through the store, which was shining bright, fresh and new with top-of-the-line products just waiting to be bought.

But the fans wanted Cesar, their Dog Whisperer, and they were willing to tough it out for a minute with the famed trainer.

“Back of the line,” one dog owner hollered at another.

Cesar Millan was in town to help John Dunn celebrate the grand opening of his pet complex, Passionate Pet, in Irvine. The store boasts the best pet food, a wide array of products and toys, and host of services like grooming, daycare and boarding.

The retail store also sponsored the first Passionate Pet Halloween Costume Contest, in which Millan was a judge.

Dog Whisperer wants to meet your problem dog

October 1st, 2009, 12:28 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

Dog owners with problem pups have another chance to seek help from Cesar Millan.

Producers with Millan’s television show, Dog Whisperer, will host auditions from 4 to 5 p.m.  Tuesday (Oct. 6) at Petco in Whittier.

The show held auditions in Huntington Beach and Buena Park in July.

To be considered for the show, you MUST create a 5-7 minute video. In the video, tell the producers a little about yourself and be sure to show at least 3 instances of your dog’s bad, quirky, or phobic behavior.

Producers ask owners of aggressive dogs to keep them on a leash, in a muzzle, or behind a fence to prevent injuring any people or animals in the process of making the video.

Speaking of dogs, have you visited My Dog’s Face photo contest today? You still have time to upload your dog’s portrait and get voting.

Note: Owners should NOT bring their aggressive dogs to the audition.

Audition submissions cannot be accepted without a video. Find out more information and print release forms at cesarmillaninc.com.

Producers, not Cesar Millan, will interview each dog owner for a few minutes inside the Petco store as part of the audition process.

Google map: The Petco is located at 13420 Whittier Boulevard, Whittier, CA 90605.

Dog Whisperer auditions reveal serious dog problems

July 8th, 2009, 2:21 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor
Please enable Javascript and Flash to view this Brightcove video.

I spent part of the afternoon Tuesday in line with some really angst-ridden dogs.

Owners and their hapless pups were in Buena Park to audition for Cesar Millan’s television show the “Dog Whisperer.”

About 100 people showed up, some in support roles to help family members corral badly behaving dogs.

Here are some of the issues owners told me about:

slideshow_cesarauditionsMost frightening: Cody, a 3-year-old dog adopted from the Long Beach ASPCA, wants to “kill other dogs,” his owner Danielle Frey of La Habra told me. Despite thousands of dollars spent on training, Frey could not find a good solution for her dog’s aggression.

Surprise attacks: Cooper, a 3-year-old boxer-pit mix is dog aggressive. Adopted from the O.C. animal shelter, he’s quick to attack other dogs and has been in three gnarly fights. “I think he was attacked before we got him,” owner Lauren Briggs of Yorba Linda said. Otherwise, the dog was a happy, gentle family dog. “I’m fearful he’s going to hurt someone,” Briggs said.

Head injury: Angel was quiet and well behaved in line. The mostly white German short-haired pointer has a real problem, however. An injury from her puppy days put a significant dent in her head, something the owners couldn’t see when she was a tiny pup. The brain injury underneath likely led to obsessive spinning in times of stress, said owner Erin Cosgrove of Cypress. “She just spins and spins and spins,” she said.

Large and in charge: Peanut, a year-old American mastiff, was a sweety pie but she’s taking advantage of her bulk and dragging her owner all over the place. “Other people are afraid of her size,” said owner Todd Siler of Buena Park. His wife was having a hard time walking the dog, and Peanut had developed a new habit of charging through the screen doors to see other dogs. “I don’t want her to hurt anyone,” Siler said.

Protective to a fault: Lola was a 2-year-old boxer-pit mix. Her owner Luis Mendez admitted she has a split personality. “She’s very protective and such a lover,” he said. She’s great inside the home, but aggressive to the point of biting when she’s outside, guarding the home.

Guard dog: Joey, a Jack Russell, has a nasty habit of attacking anyone new through the front door. His owner, Steven Van Smaalen of Cypress, said the dog has a knack for attacking the maids, who use brooms and cleaning tools to scare the dog off the door. Joey has bitten a couple people hard enough to draw blood.

Sir Barks a Lot: Jak, a 4-year-old Australian shepherd was not aggressive by nature but his bark sure was. The dog struggled to obey while waiting in line. Other dogs distracted him to near meltdowns, at which point his owner would walk the dog into the parking lot for a timeout. Jak’s constant need to play and bark had owner Wendy Haines of Brea quite fed up.

Read the rest of the story here or click on the photo above to see a slideshow from the event.

Auditions continue July 14 (next Tuesday) in Huntington Beach. Producers will be looking for unique stories (so another barking dog or lunging, aggressive dog is not going to pique their interest). And a note to “Dog Whisperer” fans: Cesar Millan will NOT be at these auditions.

A reminder to pet owners: leave your aggressive dogs at home. The stress of waiting in line can aggravate an already difficult dog.

Also, remember your seven-minute video!!

July 14: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., at the Huntington Beach Petco at 5961 Warner Ave.

In case you can’t make the Orange County auditions, there’s one more in Los Angeles:

July 21: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Los Angeles Petco, 1475 S. Robertson Blvd.

You can read more about auditions and requirements online at: www.cesarmillaninc.com/. Click on the “Dog Whisperer” link.
