CARE teams up with Petsmart to save needy pets

November 13th, 2009, 4:24 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

If you’re shopping at the neighborhood Petsmart this weekend, consider helping out a homeless pet.

For those of you in south Orange County (or anywhere else), you can visit the animals of CARE at the San Juan Capistrano store location.

Capistrano Animal Rescue Effort will take part in the PetSmart’s “Holiday National Adoption Event,” which will be held today through Sunday.

Petsmart — with the help of local rescue groups and animal shelters — hopes to connect more than 1,000 homeless pets with new families this weekend.

CARE associates will be at the store from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with adoptable animals recovered from Orange County Animal Services.  All animals have been spay/neutered, fitted with a microchip ID, have their required immunizations and been examined by a vet.

And to assist new “pet parents” with caring for their new family member, PetSmart will provide every dog and cat adopter with free samples from Pro Plan®, Tidy Cats® and PetSmart.

PetSmart is located at 33963 Doheny Park Road (Camino Capistrano) in San Juan Capistrano.  For more information on the event, contact PetSmart at (949) 443-5336.

For information on CARE, visit www.capoanimalrescue.com or call 949-240-1735.

Dogged star power ups reward to $5,000

November 5th, 2009, 3:16 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

jillian-maggie

We say this as a compliment. Jillian Reynolds, you are like a dog on a bone.

The TV personality has put her celebrity connections to work and has collected $5,000 in pledges to help solve the case of a dog beaten Oct. 30 in Huntington Beach.

Reynolds messaged her fans and followers today via Twitter:

“The reward for info on two boys who beat the dog is up to 5 thousand dollars!! Thanks to my friends Lori and Danny!!! Let’s find these boys.”

The co-host of Good Day LA on KTTV Fox11 has been collecting money to draw attention to the unsolved case of Maggie, a dog that was rescued after being struck repeatedly by two boys wielding miniature baseball bats on Oct. 30 near the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue. A passerby intervened, and then took the injured pit bull mix home in a shopping cart.

The witness, Stephen Taonev, sought help from a neighbor who transported the dog to the Animal Assistance League of Orange County, which has a shelter in Midway City. Shelter employees realized the dog could not walk because of her injuries, so they took her to the Advanced Critical Care and Internal Medicine pet hospital in Tustin for treatment.

Slayer

We haven’t forgotten you, cat people. Take our daily pet poll:  Potty talk, what does your finicky feline favor?

AALOC President Colleen McCammon said Thursday that Maggie’s recovery will take several weeks. The 18-month-old pit bull mix has been moved to a 24-hour daycare facility that specializes in injured or sick pets.

“Maggie’s been great,” McCammon said. “She’s been sweet with everyone.”
McCammon said the nonprofit has received about a dozen offers from people to adopt Maggie, when she’s fully healed.

Dr. Heather Mineo, a critical-care veterinarian at the Tustin animal hospital, said the dog had probably been hit by a car before she was beaten. X-rays revealed Maggie had multiple pelvic fractures, two rib fractures, and nerve damage to her left front leg.

The AALOC is now offering the reward money in exchange for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the people who abused the dog.

If you would like to contribute funds to the dog’s veterinary bill, you can e-mail aaloc@aaloc.org or call 714-893-4393. Tax-deductible donations can be sent to: Animal Assistance League of Orange County, P.O. Box 38, Midway City, CA 92655.

Octoberfest isn’t just for people: Shepherds will play, too

October 12th, 2009, 12:57 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

Humans won’t be alone in celebrating their German ancestry this October.

On Sunday (Oct. 18) more than 100 German Shepherd dogs accompanied by their well-behaved owners, will gather at Huntington Beach’s Central Park to celebrate their collective good fortune.

The dogs share a common bond:  They have all been rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed by the rescue group German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County.

The reunion event will bring dogs from Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino and Riverside counties, where the group has placed over 1,500 dogs with new families since its origin in 2005.

In addition to vendor booths, pet portrait sittings, health conscious dog treats, and raffle prizes, a two-hour  training instruction customized specifically to the German shepherd breed will be conducted by Vladae Roytapel, the “Russian Dog Wizard”, renowned for his fluency in the “doglish” language.

Vladae will provide attendees with unique insight into the shepherd character to allow them to better understand their dogs, maximize their training efforts, and get the most out of their relationship with their canine companions.

webvladaebarkCoupling good information with good humor in his training approach, Vladae has helped thousands of dog owners throughout the world achieve success.  He has been featured on CNN, NBC, ABC, and Fox News, as well as in hundreds of local and national publications.

Contests will include: “Tallest Ears,” “Longest Tail,” “Longest Snout,” and “Best German Shepherd Wannabe.”

The event runs from noon through 4:00 p.m., and advance reservations are required.

For more information about GSROC-toberfest or German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County, visit www.gsroc.org or contact Mary Franz at maryfranz@charter.net.

Get your hair cut and save a needy pet or two

October 2nd, 2009, 3:56 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

a0981431 A simple lip wax could save a homeless pet here in Orange County.

Studio 4 of Newport Beach will host a hair cut-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11.

There are a lot of homeless pets in Orange County in need of new homes. You can view some of them at Faces in the Crowd, a photo-inspired gallery here at Pet Tales.

The fundraiser will benefit the Irvine Animal Care Center and Stray Cat Alliance. Proceeds raised from hair cuts, highlights, brow shaping and lip waxing will go toward the spaying, neutering, rescue and placement of abandoned pets.

A haircut, typically priced at $100 and up, will cost customers $55 at the cut-a-thon.

The event will be held at the salon, which is located at 1303 Avocado Ave., Suite 155. All services require a reservation, so call ahead: 949-706-0801. Customers are asked to pay with cash or checks.

The salon also appreciates donations of old (clean) blankets, towels, leashes and collars for use at the animal shelters.

By the way: The beagle-Chihuahua mix seen above is available for adoption at the Orange County Animal Care shelter in Orange. Click on his photo to navigate to the site.

Want to help a two-legged dog get around?

October 1st, 2009, 2:55 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

scoobyrooIt’s not every day you hear about a dog missing not just one … but two legs.

The folks at Fuzzy Dog and Cat Rescue Inc. in Santa Monica rescued Scooby Roo from a bad situation. The young dog was found cowering under a junked car, thumping around on his chest, covered in wounds. The dog was missing his two front legs, likely the result of a birth defect.

But Scooby Roo turned out to be a happy puppy with the will to live. His rescuers are looking for guardian angels to help fund several custom-made carts to help the handicapped pooch get around. Since he’s growing, the dog will need multiple carts to get him to his full-grown size.

Sheila Choi, executive director of Fuzzy Dog and Cat Rescue, also is looking for a good home for Scooby Roo.

If you’re interested in helping the cause, go to Scooby Roo’s page at Fuzzy Dog Rescue or call 310- 883-5681. The nonprofit accepts payments via PayPal and through the mail. (Tax ID number: 20-3949123)
