Son of White Cloud officially gets a name

November 17th, 2009, 2:36 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

san_diego_panda_cub__la110

The baby panda at the San Diego Zoo was finally bestowed a name.panda-cam

Zoo officials announced today the 3-month-old black-and-white ball of fur will be called Yun Zi, which is Chinese for “Son of Cloud.”

The cub was born on Aug. 5 but, following Chinese tradition, it wasn’t named for 100 days. The name was selected from among 6,300 recommendations by the public.

Yun Zi is the fifth cub born to the zoo’s 300-pound mother panda, Bai Yun, whose name means “White Cloud.”

He’s only the 14th panda in the United States, including five in San Diego.

Yun Zi weighed about 4 ounces when he was born but now weighs more than 10 pounds.

Yun Zi’s birth was posted on the zoo blog and a “panda cam” that allowed people to see the cub in a zoo den was so popular that it briefly crashed.

Just as cool weather sweeps across Orange County, The Limited reveals a new line of sweaters … for dogs.

limited-contestThe sweater campaign is woven into a contest, too. So dog owners, get your photos ready.

The sweaters match items made for those of us that walk on two legs. The price is $24.50, no matter the size or style. Sizes range from 6 to 28 pounds, in small, medium and large.

The fashion retailer teamed up with social media company Brickfish to launch an online pet photo/story contest for consumers.

The contest ends Dec. 28.

World’s tallest dog lives just south of O.C.

November 13th, 2009, 6:02 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

tall_dog__la114

Am I stretching things a bit with the Orange County reference? Maybe!

But perhaps one day while you’re at Dog Beach in Surf City, you’ll get a glimpse of Titan …

tallest_dog_cadiu101Titan earned the title world’s tallest dog this week, courtesy of the Guiness Book of World Records. Titan was the only animal honored out of 30 records announced or set Thursday — the official Guinness World Record Day.

The 4-year-old white Great Dane from San Diego is blind, deaf, epileptic and undergoes acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments every three weeks, owner Diana Taylor told Sue Manning with The Associated Press.

“Titan is magical,” she added. “He’s low-key, calm and has a wonderful demeanor about him. He gets along with all dogs, even the tiny ones.”

The massive canine is often mistaken by children for a horse or cow.

*Eyes on you: Eagle endures heckling in Mission Viejo

November 4th, 2009, 11:51 am by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

webeagle-mv-april

*We’ve update this post, as of Nov. 6., to say thanks to an eagle-eyed reader who points out the bird photographed is likely a white-tailed kite. Thanks for noticing!

Greg Clark of Mission Viejo sent us this fantastic shot of an eagle staring down a pesky crow last spring. He writes:

This picture was taken in April of a young bald eagle perched in a tree in our back yard in Mission Viejo. It stayed there for about an hour while the crows tried to make it leave.

If you snap a photo of wild creatures in your neighborhood, on a trail, or anywhere else, please send them to pets@ocregister.com and we’ll share them with the world.

November 2nd, 2009, 5:45 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

usainboltadoptsacheetah

Fast … meet fast.

kenyausainboltnai116The world’s fastest man adopted the animal kingdom’s fastest sprinter Monday, as Usain Bolt welcomed a new baby cheetah named Lightning Bolt into his life.

The Associated Press reports that Bolt has paid $13,700 to formally adopt the cub. He will also pay $3,000 a year to care for Lightning Bolt, who will be raised at an animal orphanage in Nairobi.

The Jamaican sprinter’s sponsorship of the 3-month-old male cheetah is part of an effort to boost Kenyan conservation efforts of its famous wildlife, whose survival is threatened by trophy hunting, climate change and human encroachment.

The money Bolt spent will go to the Kenya Wildlife Service, and some will be used to protect Kenya’s endangered species, KWS director Julius Kipngetich said.

Faces in the Crowd: Maybe it’s time to CARE for a cat

October 30th, 2009, 6:38 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

The Capistrano Animal Rescue Effort has some darling new additions to their roster of felines that need homes. If you’ve got room for one more, please give them a call.

The animals are part of Faces in the Crowd, a regular series here at Pet Tales that aims to connect pet lovers with new, four-legged family members.

Also, CARE will take part in the PetSmart “Holiday National Adoption Event,” Friday through Sunday, Nov. 13-15 at PetSmart in San Juan Capistrano.  Prospective “pet parents” are invited to visit the CARE adoption booth from noon to 4 p.m. all 3 days.

If you’re interested in adopting any of these cats, click on the image for more details, and be sure to contact CARE.

Each of the CARE’s cats has been spayed or neutered, tested for FELV/FIV, current on vaccines, wormed and micro-chipped.

About Faces in the Crowd:
This regular series at Pet Tales will highlight through photographs homeless pets in need. The goal is to share with our reading audience portraits from Orange County shelters and nonprofit rescue groups. Click here to read more about the series.

CARE will discount the price of a second cat/kitten, if someone adopts a pair. For more information, call (949) 240-1735, or visit www.capoanimalrescue.com. You can also contact CARE via e-mail.

For a “hands-on experience,” visit the cats and kittens in the Cattery at PetSmart, 33963 Doheny Park Rd., San Juan Capistrano.

Founded in 2000, CARE is a nonprofit charitable group that rescues, cares for and finds adoptive homes for abandoned cats and dogs from San Juan Capistrano. Since its founding, CARE has rescued and adopted nearly 1,200 pets.
