Firefighters escort dog injured in wreck to vet

November 16th, 2009, 6:54 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

This story about a dog, its owner, and a ride in the car has a happy ending, despite a nasty wreck in Orange.

02crashorange111709bbc_A woman driving a Toyota Camry slammed into a telephone pole around 9 a.m. Monday morning in front of the Lincoln Auto Spa car wash at Lincoln and Glassell avenues.

Firefighters helped extricate the woman and the dog.

According to Bruce Chambers, our ace photographer here at The Register, the dog had an injured leg and was taken to a veterinarian in a firetruck as the woman was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

The dog was lifted out of the car and into the firetruck by Anaheim firefighter Gary Vaughn.

Travel tip: Buckle up Fido and avoid a tragedy

With holiday travel on the brain and a recent accident involving a dog, it’s a good time to remind folks to buckle up their pooches, too.

An unrestrained dog in the interior of a car poses a grave risk to the driver and the pet. In an accident, your pet’s body becomes missile that can injure you and potentially kill or maim your pet.

On Thursday, a canine passenger was injured in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 5 in Irvine. The driver was hurt and the injured dog was left with fireman who transported the animal to Orange County Fire Authority for treatment.

Ideally, pets should travel either crated or secured to a seat-belt system with a sturdy harness.

Check your favorite pet stores for a viable harness option. The devices are usually based on the chest size of your pet, so be sure to measure first. Do some homework first: Prices typically are lower if you shop online.
