What punishment fits this crime? You be the judge

The good news is, the cat is going to be OK …

The duct-taped cover feline was found dumped in a yard in Philadelphia but fortunately was found by the local SPCA. Medical staff at the SPCA were able to successfully remove the tape.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the conviction of whoever wrapped the feline.

Pet Tales wants to know, what kind of punishment would readers suggest for the perpetrator?

Video of the day: Cat vs. raccoon (everybody wins)

baby-oppossumThe setting is pretty sublime: Great back yard, a bowl stuffed with kibble … and yeah, that pesky cat.

But no matter, this crafty raccoon has thumbs (sort of), so snatching a snack from under the nose of a feisty feline is no problem!

The video reminds me of a baby opossum that recently stumbled onto our porch in Orange. He chomped happily from the food bowl as the cat watched from a few feet away.

A reminder to all of us cat owners: Animal control folks warn us that leaving food outside for the wildlife to nibble on is not a good idea. This only brings along the predators, aka coyotes, who will likely snatch your cat and not the nimble and mostly silent creatures like opossum and raccoons.

It’s a slow news day in the land of pets … So, we’re breaking out some favorite videos. Those of us who have dog or cat doors can probably relate to this event. Recently, I’ve had a passel of opossum babies wander through my yard, which makes me wonder if or when they’ll ever find our doggie door and make themselves at home …

Cat joins crossing guard for daily duties

slideshow_stormySometimes you read a story about a pet and it just makes you smile, and then smile again.

And so it goes with the tale of Stormy, a black cat in Huntington Beach that spends part of his day with crossing guard Barbara Scalla.

My colleague Annie Burris reports the oh-so social cat has been visiting Scalla and students at Killybrooke Elementary School parking lot for nearly four years now.

You can read more about Stormy here.

Photo moment of the day goes to Terry Prather at the Ledger Independent in Kentucky:

A cat tosses a mole into the air Monday near Maysville, Ky. Upon hitting the ground, the mole quickly disappeared.

Now, take a closer look:

Great job by the shooter. The mole is perfectly aerodynamic, eh? Go, mole!
