Ask Marie: Is it wrong for dogs to sleep in my bed?

September 4th, 2009, 1:00 am by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

Dear Marie,

I have a two-year-old female, Heinz-57, medium sized, shelter dog who may as well be my child.  I spoil her rotten, but she deserves it.  She is sweet, well-behaved, gentle, and completely trustworthy.  I have had her almost a year now and I can’t say anything bad about her.  Recently I was mentioning to a coworker that my dog sleeps on my bed.  She told me I was making a big mistake and setting my dog up for serious behavioral issues, especially since it is a shelter dog with an unknown background.  I like to think of myself as a competent dog owner, but I’ve never heard of this before.  All my life I’ve allowed my dogs to sleep on my bed.  So is this potentially a problem? — Maddie, Buena Park

Dear Maddie,
A lot of dog trainers will insist that you should never have your dog sleep on your bed with you because that will send the mhulett-sigessage that you and the dog are equals.

In some cases, I agree with that.  For example, I have had several rescued German Shepherds in my life and they all needed much more routine and discipline than other dogs I’ve had in order to be well-adjusted and completely trustworthy.  So even though they were all major “lap-dogs” (though only their heads and front paws actually fit in my lap), they never slept in my bed.  They had their own beds on the floor at the foot of my bed and that worked well for all of us.

But I’ve had other dogs that were allowed to sleep on my bed.  None of them were breeds that needed my authority to be reinforced so behavioral issues weren’t a concern.

My daughter’s Pomeranian slept with my husband and me every night until my daughter got married and took him to her new home.  Even when he comes back for extended-stay “baby” sitting, he sleeps with us.  He is one of the most docile, mild-mannered dogs I’ve ever known and he will never try to assert himself with anyone.

You really need to decide what’s best on a case-by-case basis and that sounds like what you are doing already.  You’ve had your dog for a year and describe her as well-behaved and gentle.  If she hasn’t shown signs that she is testing your authority, then this is a non-issue.

Of course, you should practice obedience training regularly and make sure that she is not food-aggressive or possessive of toys, etc.  If you can take her food bowl away while she is eating, or pick up one of her toys without incident, then you’ve got a dog who trusts you and respects your position as “mom” which is really what most domesticated dogs do anyway.

Problems only occur when someone does not properly socialize and train dogs that are more prone to unacceptable behaviors.  Rottweilers, Chow Chows, Akitas, pit bulls, German Shepherds, are a few of the breeds that need to know you’re in charge and you have everything under control.  The main reason for this stems from their own insecurity.  If dogs like these feel that no one is really keeping the pack safe, then they can’t relax.

This increased tension and anxiety will lead them to believe that they need to rise to the occasion, which means they are going to show their human roommates that they have what it takes to be the leader of the pack.  That’s never a good thing.  Consequently, they must be shown in a manner that is crystal clear, that their people have control of everything—and unfortunately, that includes the bed.

There are always exceptions.  I’ve known pit bulls and Akitas that are major pushovers.  I’ve also known little cockapoos that are completely out of control.  Ultimately, if your dog knows her manners and what is expected of her, sleeping on your bed isn’t going to change that.  Continue to spoil her, because as a previous shelter dog, she does indeed deserve it.

Attention Snuggie freaks: There’s room for one more

July 31st, 2009, 3:58 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

dog-snuggieIf the world hadn’t already seen enough Snuggies (ugh), they’ve gone out and done the unthinkable.

Snuggie for dogs.

… sigh …

Will you buy a Snuggie for your pooch?

The hard-to-miss, bright blue fleece blanket-top has been the subject of giant block parties and overall ridicule. Seriously, you need a fleece blanket made into a garment?

You feel my pain, right?

For all of you who own shivery, thin-furred dogs, I relent. Maybe this is just what your Chihuahua needs.

I was thoroughly beside myself to see there are no Snuggies for over-size lapdogs named Katy. Hey, she might weigh 100 pounds but she likes her fleece!

The photos say it all, but here are the rest of the details from The Associated Press:

BOWIE, Texas — Nearly 500 dogs were seized Tuesday from a kennel where a Humane Society supervisor said several dead animals were found after complaints the dogs hadn’t received proper veterinary care.

The Montague County Sheriff’s Department served search warrants at Maggic Pets/Heddins Kennel, which offers on its Web site breeds including pugs, schnauzers, toy beagles, akitas and shitzus.

Cloyce Heddins, the husband of the kennel’s owner, told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the dogs received proper care and authorities had bad information. He said his wife, Carol, has heart problems and was taken to a hospital by ambulance when officers arrived.

“We’ve been in this business a long time,” Heddins told the newspaper. “If you raise dogs, you’ve got to get them veterinary care, especially if you’re trying to make a living of it.”

Heddins did not immediately return a Tuesday night call from The Associated Press.

Reminder: Dog Whisperer auditions are Tuesday and July 14

July 1st, 2009, 2:37 pm by Samantha Gowen, Pet Tales editor

*Updated: I mistyped and said “La Habra” when it should have said “Buena Park.” Thanks to a watchful reader!

Fourth of July weekends bring to mind big tables overloaded with savory food and families and friends milling about.

And there, under the picnic table, is the dog … eating your prized rack of ribs.

Hello, Dog Whisperer? We’ve got a problem.

Producers with Cesar Millan’s popular television show are coming to Orange County, and they want to meet you and your hapless pups. Auditions will be held at two Petco stores, one in *Buena Park, the other in Huntington Beach.

Millan, if you don’t already know, is a dog-behavior specialist who is known by his television show to train people and rehabilitate dogs.

So, dog people, go get your cameras. You’ll need a seven-minute video of your dog doing his worst. (And what better time to do this than a long holiday weekend?)

“We’re looking for stories that are a little bit different, with people who are interesting and have a dog with an issue we haven’t dealt with before,” said Sheila Emery, a producer with the show.

Dogs with obsessions or odd behavioral issues are more likely to attract the attention of producers. Emery stressed that submission videos capture the dog’s bad behavior.

“We’re looking for that unique factor,” she said.

The Dog Whisperer is particularly seeking owners of wolf dogs that are experiencing behavioral issues. The show plans to collaborate with a wolf expert to help correct issues like jumping (to make eye contact) or foraging eating habits.

Owners should bring their dogs to the auditions, providing they are not aggressive. Producers will spend a few minutes with each audition, so be prepared to tell your story well and quickly. Submissions will not be accepted without a video.

Producers have booked one hour at each store, but Emery said everyone in line would be seen.

Audition times and locations:

cesar-milanJuly 7: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at the Buena Park Petco, 6020 Ball Road Buena Park.

July 14: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., at the Huntington Beach Petco at 5961 Warner Ave.

In case you can’t make the Orange County auditions, there’s one more in Los Angeles:

July 21: 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., Los Angeles Petco, 1475 S. Robertson Blvd.

You can read more about auditions and requirements online at: www.cesarmillaninc.com/. Click on the “Dog Whisperer” link.
